The A Byzantine Scale.

A great sounding scale.
The Formula for this scale is 1-b2-3-4-5-b6-7-1

Obviously you should memorize the pattern, and practice playing this up and down the neck of the guitar too, for example start the pattern on the 7th fret and you would be playing the B Byzantine Scale.

The Byzantine Scale is great for creating an eastern sounding drone type of effect, such as the short example in bars 5-7.  The open A string acts as a repetitive drone.
Try and experiment for yourself with this scale, it can be a lot of fun.

One of the advantages of playing around with this type of scale sound is that it helps to develop the ear to hear other types of harmony other that the basic diatonic major scale sound.

Have Fun!
